Evi-dences of volcanic action begin to be frequent:old craters converted into small lakes appear hereand there, prettily fringed with vegetation, and cov-ered with waterfowl. Scattered over the hills andthrough the valleys are numerous beautiful speci-mens of chalcedony and chips of obsidian. Manyof the chalcedonies are geodes, in which are crys-tals of quartz ; others contain opal in the centre andagate on the exterior ; and still others have on theoutside attached crystals of calcite.

HOT SPEINGS or GAKDI-nebs EIVEB. lEN miles above theDe-vils Slide, Gar-diners Elver, a moun-tain torrent twenty yards wide, cuts througha deep and gloomy gorge and enters the Yel-lowstone at the lower end of the Third CanonAt this point the Yellowstone shrinks to halfits usual size, losing itself among huge granite 28 WONDERS OF THE YELLOWSTONE boulders, which choke up the stream and createalternate pools and rapids, crowded with trout.Worn into fantastic forms by the washing water,these immense rock masses give an aspect of pecu-liar wildness to the scenery. But the crowningwonder of this region is the group of hot springson the slope of a mountain, four miles up the val-ley of Gardiners River. The first expedition passedon without seeing them, but they could not escapethe vigilance of the scientific company that fol-lowed. The lower reaches of the valley of GardinersEiver, and the enclosing hillsides, are strewn withvolcanic rock, having the appearance of furnacecinder. The tops of
