It is the Venus of Jl/e/os, so called, partlybecause a greater number of antiquaries considerit to be a Vemis Victrix (or a Venus triumphingover Minerva and Juno, and proudly holding theapple, the award of Paris, in her hand), and partlybecause it was found near the little town of Melos inan island of that name, one of the Cyclades, famousfor its catacombs, amphitheatre, and the cyclopeanramparts of its vast harbour.
