The Tiber, another giant, near to whom theshe-wolf of Mars suckles the two founders of Rome.This colossal Tiber was discovered about the begin-ning of the fifteenth century, amongst the ruins ofthe Rome of the Caesars. It remained at the Vati-can, with the group of the Nile, and was one ofthe very few ancient statues which the papal citypossessed in those days. These two old menwith long beards, carelessly resting on the urnsfrom which their waters flow, are characterised bysymbols and emblems. The Tiber, crowned withlaurels, to suggest the glory of Rome, holds an oaras a si^n that his bed is navisrable ; whilst theNile, leaning on a sphinx and holding the cornu-copia or horn of plenty, is surrounded by sixteenlittle sprites, which typify the sixteen cubits of inun-dation necessary to produce a good harvest.
