Description

London, 1920s

Photogravure by Donald Macleish from Wonderful London by St John Adcock, 1927.

From the section entitled Shopping in London:

Kensington High Street: the silent appeal of the all-powerful shop window on the daily crowd of potential customers. For a main thoroughfare, Kensington High Street is one of the narrowest in London. The pavements are correspondingly small, three large shops have their premises cheek by jowl, and the crowd is frequently larger than the space allows. Among the cars drawn up at the curb stand street hawkers and musicians. Pedestrians who have taken to the gutter in despair thread their anxious way in and out. It is entertaining to watch some severe spinster scan, with a slightly troubled look, the latest audacity in diaphanous lingerie. The lay figure in the window with waxen smile beckons the doubtful to step inside. Every now and then one of the crowd, tempted past enduring, gives up the struggle and disappears.
