Summary
[edit]DescriptionWomen in Military Service for America Memorial - looking E down access stair - 2011.JPG |
English: A view of the Women in Military Service for America Memorial. Originally known as the Hemicycle, this ceremonial entrance to Arlington National Cemetery was opened in 1932. Along the Arlington Memorial Bridge and the George Washington Memorial Parkway (then known as the Mount Vernon Memorial Parkway), it was constructed in celebration of the bicentennial of George Washington's birthday. Unfinished, unused, and in disrepair by the early 1980s, it was transformed into the Women in Military Service for America Memorial and opened to the public on October 20, 1997.
This image looks down through one of the stairways which pierces the Hemicycle and leads to the plaza in front of the memorial. Visible through the stairwell is the pool in the plaza (not filled with water at this time due to water conservation measures). Visible on either side are stairs leading up to the terrace atop the memorial. Also visible are some of the glass panels which form the rear of the terrace, and which act as a skylight for the exhibit galleries below. To the upper left is the top of the Hemicycle's apse. |
