English: Character Sketches at the Women’s Suffrage Meeting, St James’s Hall, 1884
This print shows the Women’s Suffrage meeting held at St James’s Hall in London in 1884. The meeting was chaired by Elizabeth Garrett Anderson and had speakers including Lydia Becker and Alice Scatcherd. They called for the inclusion of women’s suffrage in the Reform Bill that had been put forward by William Gladstone. Meetings like these were held throughout Britain, as shown from the banners of different suffrage societies in Leeds, Edinburgh, Newcastle and Birmingham. Shortly afterwards in 1897, the National Union of Women’s Suffrage Societies (NUWSS) was formed. PHM has objects from the NUWSS on display in Main Gallery One. |
