51 1/2 in. by 35 in. Exhibited Saint Louis Art Museum: “Navajo Weavings from the Andy Williams Collection,” October 26, 1997 – January 4, 1998 Literature Ann Lane Hedlund, Navajo Weavings from the Andy Williams Collection, 1997, p. 29, no. 3 Catalogue Note For a discussion of classic Navajo textiles see Blomberg, 1988, pp. 1-4: "During the Classic Period the Navajo wove utilitarian items of clothing such as blankets, shirts, dresses, and belts for their own use and for trade to other Indian groups. Early Navajo blankets were used as outer garments for protection from the elements. Tightly woven of wool, they provided warmth and shed water...In general, men's and women's shoulder blankets and dresses dominate Classic Period textiles...Technically, the Navajo weaver achieved a level of excellence seldom reached since, producing a functional blanket as well as a premier work of art."
