Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Wolvesey Castle, Winchester, 7 February 2019. Originally built as the Bishop's Palace for Winchester Cathedral in stages in 970, 1110 and 1135, it was fortified with defensive walls by Henri de Blois (brother of King Stephen) in 1141 during The Anarchy. The Empress Matilda (Stephen's wife and enemy!) beseiged the castle and city in 1141 during which the castle/palace was badly damaged and the city burnt to the ground 'The Route of Winchester'. Subsequently, Henry II 'slighted' the castle although the residentail parts of the palace remained. In 1646 the Roundheads finally totally destroyed the castle and palace during the English Civil War. A new Bishop's Palace was built in 1684 but partly demolished in 1786. However, the remaining wing was once more restored as the Bishop's Palace in 1926. Pictured are the ruins of the old palace and castle.
