Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Wolfe Tone Square Bantry The statue of the Irish revolutionary Theobald Wolfe Tone (1763 - 1798) presides over Bantry town square named after him. The connection with the town was established in 1796 when the French were persuaded by Wolfe Tone to send an expedition to invade Ireland. A fleet of 43 ships containing 14,000 men under Admiral Hoche attempted to land in Bantry Bay, but were beaten back by severe gales. The local militia under Richard White of Bantry House were alerted, and were the first to give warning of the attempted invasion. Richard White was subsequently created Earl of Bantry, whilst Wolfe Tone was eventually captured in 1798, but eluded the hangman by committing suicide in his Dublin prison cell.
