English: The bus stands along The Broadway, Woking, Surrey, seen during the snow in January 2011. The first widespread snow that Britain faced in the early 2010 spell started on the evening of 5 January. Significant snowfall continued overnight, and by Wednesday 6 January the roads were in chaos, especially as Surrey County Council had only gritted A-roads to preserve salt stocks. Most bus operators in South East England suspended services for the entire day on Wednesday 6 January, including Arriva and Countryliner in Woking. Abellio Surrey were the only bus operator running in the town. Abellio are not the town's main operator, and at the time only one of their services terminated at the station - hence the complete lack of any buses in the photo. In the background are bus stops 1 - 6, where some passengers were waiting in vain for Arriva buses, their hopes having been risen by the occasional sight of an Abellio bus. The fact that Arriva buses would usually be swarming around here, but none had come for hours, didn't seem to faze them! |
