And clearer than all elsethere stands in relief the form and face of one of the bravestmen that lived, who in this crisis gave me the assurance ofa friendship which I have ever valued as one of the pricelesstreasures of my life. I had known John Gibson only a few months; he was anofficer in another company than mine, and yet we were al-ready like brothers. There is not only a divinity thatshapes our ends; there is a divine, a mysterious influencewhich shapes our friendships, and that influence had broughtus together. He was our colonels most trusted scout,venturesome without being foolhardy, cool and self-pos-sessed in the moment of peril, and so tenacious of purpose 214

LIEUT. JOHN A. GIBSON, CO. C, 4TH ALABAMA CAVALRY From a photograph taken ten years after the Civil War closed WITH SABRE AND SCALPEL that when sent out for information he never came in empty-handed. I had been close to him already on two excitingoccasions, the one when Brownlows men killed his horsenear Rover, the other when our two wounded men weremurdered near Eagleville, for he was in charge of the scoutthat day. In the emergency that was at hand now, while the doubleblue line, with their drawn sabres gleaming high abovetheir heads and bearing down on us at a gallop, was stilltwo or three hundred yards away, Gibson galloped to myside and said, Johnny, when we break Ill be with you,and, pointing back in the direction we were to retreat, hesaid, Bear off to the left yonder, and then he went tohis place. Gibsons quick eye had seen what would prob-ably have escaped me, as I was comparatively new in thebusiness of war. Our position was very nearly oppositethe extreme left of the advanc
