The water was very high, and it covered points whichwere, when we ascended the river, high and dry; but thepool was very wide, and consequently there were manyshoal places, and, casting across these to their furtheredges, we soon found there were a good many fish lyingin the yellow water; for Frere at his third cast hookeda small eight-pound salmon, and I, at almost the samemoment, struck a grilse. I agree with my good friend A. N. Cheney thatthere would be nothing attractive in it, if it were allof fishing to fish; if fish were only to be obtained inpools in a desert waste that never reflected leaf or twig;from walled-in reservoirs, where fish are fattened like abullock for the shambles; from sluggish, muddy streamswithin the hearing of great towns, redolent of odors thatare bred
