To all these sounds I listened until my cigar was fin-ished, when, turning upon my side and covering my headwith my felt camping hat, I fell asleep again, and didnot wake until the sound of the guides axe aroused usin the morning. Emerging from the tent we found that Hiram hadarrived and with William was busy at the fire preparingbreakfast. It is almost incredible how quickly the woods-man can start a fire, no matter how heavy the rain maybe or how wet the fuel. The first thing is to find anold pine or cedar stump, and the resinous wood hewntherefrom will start a rousing fire in the worst of weather. The rain had ceased, but a heavy fog hung over theriver and on the sides of the hills about us.
