A good deal, as you know, depends on the riverand season, and the condition of the water, replied Frere.I depend a good deal on the standards, such as thebutcher, Durham ranger, Nickerson, Jock Scott, fairy, etc.,but they should, late in the season, be of smaller sizesthan in the early fishing. I have known of excellentsport being had with a tiny Jock Scott, when a largefly failed to get a rise. I was once on the JacquetRiver (N. B.J with my friend F. M. McLeod. We werefishing Frankers (Francois) Pool about the first of Aug-ust. We had killed some fine fish in the evenine, buton the next morning not the least attention was paid toour flies, though fish were rising all over the pool, ap-parently after small insects which we observed floating onthe surface of the water. Somewhat disgusted, I betook myself to fly-tyingafter breakfast, while Mac, who is a most persistent ang-ler, continued to whip away. In about an hour he cameto the tent and said, Cox, it beats all!
