It hadbeen a long day of entertainment and sightseeing; theSpeaker had been in active service for sixteen straight hours. We gathered on the deck, but for a sad good-night. The word had been kept fromus, and now, only as the long days festivities drew to aclose, we were informed that the son of the Congressmanhad been taken from him arid that the father had quicklyboarded a steamer for a solemn weeks journey to the bier ofhis bov.

St. Patricks Day fell upon Sunday. It found us sailingalong the northern coast of South America, covering thedistance of 350 miles from the Port of Spain to the Vene-zuelan port of La Guaira. It was a restful day upon thesea, but not without incident, for St. Patrick had his friendsaboard, including the German steward, who generouslydecorated the dining-room in a gorgeous setting of green.The Rev. Dr. Tiffany conducted divine services in theafternoon, and everybody attended, including Tawney andSherman, who led the singing.
