ded with cultivated hills, andfrom the bridge which crosses the broad channel of theArno, the view is the most animated and elegant I eversaw. You see tliree or four bridges, one apparently sup-ported by Corinthian pillars, and the white sails of theboats, relieved by the deep green of the forest, which comesto the waters edge, and the sloping hills covered withbright villas on every side. Domes and steeples rise onall sides, and the cleanliness is remarkably great. On theother side there are the foldings of the Yale of Arnoabove; first the hills of olive and vine, then the chestnutwoods, and then the blue and misty pine forests, whichinvest the aerial Apennines, that fade in the distance. Ihave seldom seen a city so lovely at first sight asFlorence. A slightravine, with a road in its depth, divided the garden from thehni, on which stood the ruins of the ancient castle of Este, whose dark massive waU, gave forth an echo, and from whoseruined crevices owls and bats flitted forth at night, as thecrescent moon sunk behind the black and heavy battlements.
