pes,is beyond anything I had imagined architecture capable ofproducing. The interior, though very sublime, is of amore earthly character, and with its stained glass andmassy granite columns overloaded with antique figures, andthe silver lamps, that burn for ever under the canopy ofblack cloth beside the brazen altar and the marble fretworkof the dome, give it the aspect of some gorgeous sepulchre. There is one solitary spot among those aisles, behind thealtar, where the light of day is dim and yellow under thestoried window, which I have chosen to visit, and readDante there. I have devoted this summer, and indeed the next year,to the composition of a tragedy on the subject of Tasso^smadness, which I find upon inspection is, if properlytreated, admirably dramatic and poetical. But you willsay I have no dramatic talent. Very true in a cer-tain sense; but I have taken the resolution to see whatkind of tragedy a person without dramatic talent couldwrite. The plain of theMilanese, and that of Parma, is exquisitely beautiful — itis like one garden, or rather cultivated wilderness ; becausethe corn and the meadow-grass grow under high and thicktrees, festooned to one another by regular festoons of vines. On the seventh day we arrived at Pisa, where we remainedthree or four days. A large disagreeable city, almost with-out inhabitants. We then proceeded to this great tradingtown, where we have remained a month, and which, in afew days
