THE YEAR 1818 glimpses into the poefs inmr mind, rough draughts of thepoem, as it were. They conjii-m what, indeed, we shoulddivine zvithout them, that the poems of this year werexvrittenfor their own sake and to express Shelleys pureJoy in that living spirit zvhich he conceived Nature to be.In a time like our ozon, lohen the interest in scientifictheories concerning the processes of nature is so absorb-ing, all the more zoelcome is a voice like Shelleys tospeak of the spiritual side, the side seen by the artist andlover of Nature for her ozvn sake. PASSAGE OF THE APENNINES Listen, listen, Mary mine,To the whisper of tlie Apennine,It bursts on the roof like the thunders roar,Or like the sea on a northern shore.Heard in its raging ebb and flowBy the captives pent in the cave below. The Apennine in the light of dayIs a mighty mountain dim and grey,Which between the earth and sky doth lay;But when night comes, a chaos dreadOn the dim starlight then is spread,And the Apennine walks abroad
