Seen at Mountain Mist resort. These generally are associated with mites in the family Eriophyidae. It is not yet clear whether the mites cause the growths or vector microbial pathogens that cause them. The brooms are ecologically important; many organisms including the mites shelter and feed in them. This photo shows the ageing of brooms as the pathology and resident organisms take effect.
