English: Winter Hill TV transmitter Winter hill (456mtrs) is the highest point on Smithills moor. The mast was erected in 1965, since this time many other micro wave link dishes have been built. The hill was the scene of an plane accident in 1958, when a Bristol 170 aircraft from the Isle of Man crashed, killing 35 people, with 7 survivors.
Another notable landmark is a metal post (Scotsman's stump) erected in memory of George Henderson, who was murdered on the hill in 1838. |
