Description

Telegram Building

The Telegram Building was originally built for the R. J. Whitla Company and their dry goods wholesale business. Whitla owned one of Winnipeg’s largest wholesale concerns and was a prominent citizen of Manitoba. He was the captain of E Company, which he led in the Northwest Rebellion, and a founder of Wesley College.

It was one of the first large buildings in this former residential district; however, by 1900 the area was known to Winnipeggers as the “warehouse district”. The area was ideal – close to markets, main streets and the railway but with enough economical space for the necessary loading docks and large-scale operations.

The Winnipeg wholesale businesses thrived and grew and Whitla moved the business to a bigger warehouse in 1899 at the corner of Albert Street and McDermot Avenue. The Telegram Printing Company took over most of the building and used it to print both a daily and a weekly Telegram. This was the largest newspaper office west of Toronto at the time. The Telegram merged with the Tribune in 1920.

The building is designed in the Victoria Romanesque Style. The size and design of the windows varies from floor to floor. The rich detail of the building is created with brick and a metal cornice. After 1951, the block’s façade was changed slightly and the retail space reduced to three. Over the years the block has been home to various shops, restaurants and other services.
