Title |
Winged axe |
||
Description |
English: A cast, copper alloy wing flanged axe of the middle Bronze Age Period (c.1400 BC - 1250 BC). It is of the Taunton metalwork phase, when winged axes are more common in Northern England. There is a lozenge shaped flange on each side of the butt end. The outer side of each flange is slightly convex, resulting in the gap between the flange crests narrowing at the top above the septum. The blade tip is crescent shaped; one tip of the crescent remains, the other is missing. The butt end is also broken with a small section is missing. There is no stop for the handle to butt against, but the blade is thicker than the septum. The axe has a rough, patchy, green and brown patina with evidence of bronze disease. It is 138.6mm long, 54.9mm wide and 34.1mm wide. It weighs 403gm. |
