Summary

[edit]
Description

Operated by 418 (Canadian) squadron based at RAF Bradwell Bay in Essex. Crashed on 17th October 1942 during a cross-country training flight. It flew into the summit of Carnedd Dafydd, Snowdonia, after flying into cloud. The navigator, F/Lt Harold Longworth, RCAF, and gunner, Sgt Ronald Walker, RAFVR, were killed. The pilot, Sgt Mervyn Sims (RCAF), survived but his legs were broken, among other injuries. He made a shelter from parts of the fuselage and remained there until discovered two days later by walkers who went for help. He later made a full recovery and went on to complete a full tour including being awarded the DFC. The wrecked aircraft remained in-situ until largely recovered in 1977 by the Boston-Havoc Preservation Trust for potential restoration. Sadly, this did not happen and the collection of parts was eventually split up. This wing was on the point of being scrapped when it was saved for the museum.
