DescriptionWindblown Tree on Went Hill - geograph.org.uk - 187654.jpg |
English: Windblown Tree on Went Hill. The tree sits on the grassy hill above Birling Gap. It is shaped this way, low and leaning, due to the prevailing wind coming from the west, off the English Channel. The chalky South Downs meet the sea here at Birling Gap. On the skyline is Belle Tout Lighthouse, now a home, which has recently literally been rolled back from the vertical cliff-face which is being continually undercut by the sea. The hill containing the former lighthouse is half-circled by earthen ramparts. The southern half of the hill-fort has fallen into the sea over the millennia! |
