| Description |
The white dust in the background is actually dirt blowing off a bare saline area of a soybean field in Hutchinson County, SD. The area close to the photographer has vegetation covering the soil surface so no wind erosion is present in the foreground. Fields without any cover or crop residue from the previous year are especially vulnerable to wind erosion in the springtime because wind can dislodge soil particles. It takes 500 years to form an inch of soil and strong winds easily blow away decades of Mother Nature's work. This photo was taken on April 18, 2014, by Brent Woods, District Conservationist, Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) Parkston, SD.
