Summary

[edit]
Description

Wilson Arch, developed in the Jurassic of Utah, USA.

Rock arches are rare erosional features. Rock arches that are not formed by river or stream erosion are called "natural arches". Those that are formed by river or stream erosion are called "natural bridges". Natural bridges are rarer than natural arches. The highest concentration of natural arches on Earth is Arches National Park in eastern Utah, USA. Very small erosional openings in rocks are called windows. Larger erosional openings are arches.

The natural arch shown above is Wilson Arch. It is not in a park. It formed by differential weathering and differential erosion of quartzose sandstones of the Slickrock Member of the Entrada Sandstone (Middle Jurassic).

Locality: Wilson Arch, eastern side of Rt. 191, 3 air miles southeast of La Sal Junction, northern San Juan County, eastern Utah, USA ( 38° 16' 21.79" North latitude, 109° 22' 16.71" West longitude)
