Summary
[edit]DescriptionWilmington Priory - geograph.org.uk - 935867.jpg |
English: Wilmington Priory A small priory cell existed on the site before 1086 but was long dissolved before the Benedictines built their priory in 1243. An alien house belonging to the abbey of Grestain in Normandy, it was often seized by English monarchs during the French wars until final suppression in 1414 when it was given to the Dean and Chapter of Chichester, who remained owners until 1565 when it was given to the Sackville family. The Duke of Devonshire gave the building to its current owners, the Sussex Archeological Trust in 1925 in return for its upkeeping. There were never many monks based here, a fact highlighted by their use of the parish church rather than their own place of worship, their main job being to administer the manor of the abbey. Viewed from the 1978 graveyard extension to the west of the church. |
