| Description |
English: In 1918, nineteen years after the creation of Mount Rainier National Park, the park service built a new hotel at Longmire Springs. The area had been popular with tourists since 1890, when James Longmire cut a rough wagon trail through the dense forest to the hot springs. This was the third hotel at the site.
In this 1919 photo, a Willys-Knight automobile sits on the muddy road outside the new Longmire Springs Hotel. The hotel's sign advertises rooms with private bathrooms. The number of tourists visiting the park greatly increased as the roads were improved for year round automobile traffic. Eagle Peak rises in the background.
