| Description |
English: Duke of Gloucester Street was the main street of Williamsburg in the colonial era, and is the main street of Colonial Williamsburg. It runs between the Capitol and William and Mary College. It is one mile (1.6 km) long, and was originally 99 ft (30 m) wide, by decree of the House of Burgesses.
The historic area of Williamsburg was completely rebuilt in the late 1920s and 1930s, when Colonial Williamsburg was created. There are about 500 buildings in the historic area, of which 88 are original. Buildings affer 1790 were torn down and replaced by buildings in the colonial stye. |
