Deutsch: Die Zeil in Frankfurt am Main im Jahr 1846 auf der gegenwärtig (März 2023) als älteste bekannte Fotografie Frankfurts bezeichneten Aufnahme des Briten William Henry Fox Talbot mit Blickrichtung Hauptwache und Katharinenkirche. Er fotografierte aus einem Fenster der zweiten Etage des Hôtel de Russie, das sich bis 1891 etwa dort befand, wo heute das Einkaufszentrum My Zeil angesiedelt ist. Die Südseite der Zeil (auf diesem Foto links) bestand damals aus repräsentativen Patrizierhäusern, die Nordseite aus eleganten Palais’ und Hotels; Kaufhäuser gab es noch keine. Die Zeil galt damals als schönster Boulevard der Stadt; sie hatte eine für Frankfurter Verhältnisse ungewöhnliche Breite. Johann Georg Battonn (1740–1827): „Ihre prachtvollen Gebäude ziehen die Bewunderung der Fremden an sich, und überzeugen sie von dem Reichthum der hiesigen Bürger.“ |
