English: William Westley memorial, Whittlesford Church Near the Place
Lies the Body of Mr WILL. WESTLEY of Cambridge Grocer. He was the younger Son of ROBT. WESTLEY of Wittlesford Gent: by ELIZTH. Daughter of MICHAEL BIDDULPH of Poles- worth in Warwickshire Esq: by whom he had issue Robt, Elizth, Richd, Willm, Lucy, Biddulph, Wm, and Wm, who all died in their infancy & lie Buried near their Father. He was in his Life time an en- courager of ye Charity Schools in Cambridge, & seeing ye good effects of that most excellent Ch- arity, he generously left his two farms in Hempsted in Essex for ye founding a Charity School in Wittlesrd. ye place of his birth & ye Seat of his family out of a pious design to have ye Children of ye Poor educated in ye fear of God & instructed in ye principles of the Christian Religion, that they might become faithfull servants of God & sincere members of his holy Church. He departed this life the 13th Day of July in ye 38th year of his age annoq Domini 1723. This monument was erected at ye charge of his Widow the better to preserve ye memory of her deceased husband and of this excellent Charity & to set thee an Example Reader to go and do likewise |
