Credit / Mention de source : Library and Archives Canada, C-112053 / Bibliothèque et Archives Canada, C-112053 Description / Descriptions : When General William Amherst died in 1781 two of his children, William Pitt Amherst (1773-1859) and his sister Elizabeth Frances Amherst, were raised by their uncle Sir Jeffery Amherst. The second barony of Amherst devolved on him at his uncle's death. In 1800, he married Sarah Hickman. He was Governor-General of India, and under George IV was created Earl Amherst of Arakan and Viscount Holmesdale for his services. His appointment as Governor-General to Canada was annulled by a change in government. / Après la mort du général William Amherst en 1781, deux de ses enfants, William Pitt Amherst (1773-1859) et sa soeur Elizabeth Frances Amherst, furent pris en charge par leur oncle sir Jeffery Amherst. Le jeune garçon hérita de la seconde baronnie d'Amherst au décès de son oncle. En 1800, il épousa Sarah Hickman. Il fut gouverneur général de l'Inde et, sous le règne de George IV, fut fait comte Amherst d'Arakan et vicomte d'Holmesdale pour ses services. Sa nomination comme gouverneur général au Canada fut annulée par un changement de gouvernement. |
