Summary

[edit]
Description
En el pedestal se puede leer la siguiente inscripción: «William P. Beecher / Citizen of the U.S. of America / Born in New Haven Connecticut, XII January MDCCLXXXXVII / Died in Málaga / XXIV October MDCCCL / As a tribute to departed worth, / this tomb, / erected by his mourning friends, / is destined / to commemorate the merits of / his useful life» («William P. Beecher / Ciudadano de los EE.
English: The American businessman William P. Beecher's grave (1797-1850), American businessman, at the English Cemetery in Málaga. It is a mausoleum made of white marble and composed of a stepped quadrangular pedestal and a sarcophagus. On the base of the tomb, a medallion depicts the figure of a god Mercury, with his characteristic staff (caduceus) and a bag of coins, sailing the waters on the back of a dolphin, obvious attributes of the deceased's mercantile activities. The sarcophagus is adorned with a relief depicting an allegory of freedom, holding a flag and a shield with the legend "LIBERTY". At the top, thirteen stars surround the central figure, a possible allusion to the thirteen colonies that were the seeds of the current United States of America at the time of its independence from Great Britain. On the pedestal, the inscription read: "William P. Beecher / Citizen of the U.S. of America / Born in New Haven Connecticut, XII January MDCCLXXXXVII / Died in Málaga / XXIV October MDCCCL / As a tribute to departed worth, / this tomb, / erected by his mourning friends, / is destined / to commemorate the merits of / his useful life".
