Grave of William Oxley Thompson at Green Lawn Cemetery in Columbus, Ohio, in the United states. Thompson (1855–1933) was born in Cambridge, Ohio. He was educated at Muskingum College and Western Theological Seminary, and became a Presbyterian minister. His first wife died in 1885, after which he became interested in education. He was appointed the first president of the Longmont Presbyterian College in Colorado. He was appointed president of Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, in 1891 and served until 1899 when he resigned to become president of The Ohio State University. He was president for 26 years. In 1906, the state legislature made Ohio State the flagship college. In 1916, Ohio State won election to the Association of American Universities. During World War I, Ohio State saw a massive drop in student attendance. He resigned the presidency in 1924. |
