Summary

[edit]
Description

On this day William Ferguson Massey died in Wellington in 1925. Massey served as New Zealand’s 19th Prime Minister from 1912 through to 1925. He was a powerful yet divisive force in New Zealand politics. As founder of the Reform Party, the forerunner of the modern National party, Massey unified a disparate collection of conservatives into a force to oppose the strong Liberal party which had flourished under the leadership of Richard Seddon. Massey’s tenure as Prime Minister was not without drama, his response to the Waihi Miners Strike (1912) and the Waterfront Strike (1913) met with criticism, especially his use of “special constables”, colloquially known as Massey’s Cossacks.

During the First World War, Massey embarked on a number of overseas tours, attending the Imperial War Council meetings, as well as visiting the New Zealand troops abroad. Massey would sympathetically listen to the complaints of New Zealand servicemen, which was a source of irritation for military officials.
