Description
English: Watercolor and gum arabic on paper, with scratching out

10 1/2 X 7 in., 27 X 18.5 cm. Signed, l.l., W. HUNT

William Henry Hunt exhibited four watercolors at the 1830 Spring Exhibition of the Society of Painters in Water-colours which depicted boys on the rocks of Hastings Beach on the south coast of England. These include this example, The Fisherboy dated 1830 which was last documented in the collection of the late Sir John Witt, the Fisherboys, a large watercolor of three boys in the collection of the Duke of Norfolk, Arundel Castle, and, probably, A Fisherboy Leaning on a Rock in The Mary Brogan Museum of Art and Science, Tallahassee, Florida. These and other works from 1830 represent changes in style and subject matter for the artist, who turned away from his early pen and wash renditions of subjects he found in London and Bushey in favor of depictions of fisherfolk and others he found at Hastings, painted with stippling and other methods designed to give his watercolors increased appearances of solidity and naturalism.
