English: William H. Paul (1844–1911) was a United States soldier who fought with the Union Army during the American Civil War as a sergeant with Company E of the 90th Pennsylvania Infantry. He was awarded his nation’s highest honor for valor in combat, the U.S. Medal of Honor, for saving and protecting his regiment’s flag during the Battle of Antietam in Maryland on September 17, 1862. Wounded in action while fighting with his regiment during the Battle of Gettysburg in Pennsylvania (July 1863) and the Battle of the Wilderness in Virginia (May 5, 1864), he transferred to Company E of the 11th Pennsylvania Infantry on November 26, 1864, and was then honorably discharged from the Union’s South Street Hospital in Philadelphia on February 11, 1865. Post-war, he resided in Bel Air and Earlton, Maryland. |
