Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The William H. Johnson House, 341 Jersey Street at Porter Avenue, Buffalo, New York, August 2020. Part of the National Register-listed Fargo Estate Historic District, this two-and-a-half-story Romanesque Revival brick residence was built in 1881 from a design by the local firm of Cyrus K. Porter & Son and features a steeply-pitched gable roof atop a pair of segmental-arched windows: a smaller and simpler one in the attic, and a large tripartite one on the second floor whose cut-stone eyebrow window head sports a decorative keystone in the center. The main entrance is fronted by a simple Classical portico supported by pillars with stylized fluting. Original owner William Henry Johnson (1843-1923) was an oilman for most of the 13 years he spent living in the house: initially he was employed at the Test Oil Company, ascending from bookkeeper to full partner the year he moved in, but two years later struck out on his own manufacturing window shades and other paper hangings for the short-lived firm of Short & Johnson. By 1885, though, he was back in the petroleum business as treasurer of George V. Forman's Associated Producers Company. He appears to have moved out around 1894, and is recorded as living in Oklahoma (appropriately enough) in 1910. The house was divided into apartments around 1920, but has returned to the status of single-family residence today.
