Summary
[edit]DescriptionWilliam H. Hotchkiss House, Summer Street, Buffalo, New York - 20200918.jpg |
English: The William H. Hotchkiss House, 173 Summer Street at Oakland Place, Buffalo, New York, September 2020. Standing sentinel over a northeast corner lot, the predominant architectural feature of this two-and-a-half-story Queen Anne-style beauty is the massive side gable facing the Oakland Place side of the building, unfortunately hidden here behind the tree at left. However, the front portico is also a feast for the eyes, with Ionic columns supporting a pediment carved elaborately in foliate patterns. The right side of the façade is characterized by a wide, two-story, bow-shaped bay. The house was built in 1893 for William H. Hotchkiss (1851-1918), an attorney with the firm of Hotchkiss & Bush and later New York State Superintendent of Insurance. 173 Summer was only the first of three elegant houses in Buffalo owned by Hotchkiss; subsequent ones include 37 Oakland Place (where he lived from 1898 through 1904) and 20 Lincoln Parkway (1904-1910), both designed by the firm of Lansing & Beierl. Interestingly, city directories dated 1910 and onward place Hotchkiss and his family back at his Summer Street residence, where he would remain until his death. |
