Description

Photograph of William Goodworth England, Mayor of Barnsley, South Yorkshire, 1913-1914. He is wearing the traditional mayoral robes of Barnsley, presented to the town in 1873.

In front of the old Corn Exchange on Market Hill, Barnsley, Mayor England is waving off the Barnsley Pals regiment (Terriers of the 5th Battalion) on Thursday 6 August 1914. He said, "At short notice you are soldiers of the king." All or most of them died on the Somme, concentrating a great loss on the town. Also present is Reverend Richard Haggard. Between Haggard and the lady is Joseph Hewitt, later to become commanding officer of the First Barnsley Pals Battalion.
