Summary
[edit]DescriptionWilliam Germann House, Buffalo, New York - 20230314.jpg |
English: The William Germann House, 1102 Ellicott Street, Buffalo, New York, March 2023. A work of local architect D. Edward Metzger, the house was built in 1892 and is a fairly typical example of the Queen Anne style of architecture, as exemplified here in the asymmetrical façade, subtle Classical detailing (note the dentil row under the eaves of the side-gable roof), and of course the octagonal, tent-roofed tower that dominates the left side. The monochromatic siding in wooden shingles shows the influence of the related and contemporaneously popular Shingle style. A local native since birth, William Germann (1859-1918) leveraged his prominence as an executive of the Webster Ice Company to launch a career in local politics, serving two terms on the city council as a Republican and running unsuccessfully for the office of county treasurer in 1915. Germann lived in the house until his death, and his widow Margaret stayed on for another year until moving to Humboldt Parkway. |
