California Pioneer Dies in the East. New Bedford, Massachusetts; August 13, 1910. William F. Nye, one of the most prominent prominent oil manufacturers in the country, is dead at the age of 86 years. Nye was the oldest watch oil refiner in the United States, and his factory at Fish Landing refines 75 per cent of all the horological oil used in the world. The discovery of gold led Nye to set forth for California. He went to Nicaragua, crossed the isthmus on foot and reached San Francisco, where he was employed in erecting the first brick buildings. Returning in 1855 he engaged in mercantile pursuits until the beginning of the civil war, when he joined the army in Virginia in the capacity of a "sutler" to the Fourth Massachusetts cavalry. He was the first sutler to open a store in Richmond after the fall of the latter city. In 1853 Nye returned to New Bedford, where he engaged in the oil business.
