ually I landed and caughtup the Princess and her ladies. In the evening Iwas driven back to the hotel, accompanied by theCountess Bruhl, who bore a gift of some flowersfrom the Princess to my wife, also an invitationfor her to go to the Palace on the next day. Being a wet morning we drove in a closedcarriage to the Palace, and were received by thePrincess in the Marble Hall. Her three childrenwere brought, in charge of an English nurse, for usto see. The present Emperor of Germany was thenonly a boy of four years of age. As the weather wasso inclement the Princess suggested that we shouldmake some sketches in the interior of the Palace.I made a small coloured drawing of a view lookingthrough a long suite of reception rooms, and thePrincess completed it by adding a figure. For thispurpose one of her ladies-in-waiting posed as amodel, wearing a similar style of dress to that SKETCH IN POTSDAM PALACE—WITH FIGURE ADDED BYTHE EMPRESS FREDERICK OF GERMANY (1863) (Size 10-;- x 7£ inches.)

AT GREAT MISSENDEN 129 the Princess herself had worn on the occasion of aball given in commemoration of the centenary ofthe building of the Palace. This drawing I havecarefully preserved (see Illustration). Whilst we were at the Palace the King arrivedthere in great state for dinner at 3 p.m., the ladiesbeing all in full evening dress. We had anexcellent view of the whole ceremony. During these visits the Crown Prince was mostgenial and friendly. He showed me his privaterooms, which were furnished with the greatestsimplicity. Beside the writing-table in his studywas a seat in the form of a saddle, so that he sat towrite as if he were on horseback. There was alarge number of photographs of the Princess in hisrooms, and the Prince pointed out to me the onewhich he considered to be the most pleasing. We left Potsdam on the day after our last visitto the Palace, and went on to Berlin, as thePrincess had requested me to attend at her palacethere on the following morning. On my arrival Ilea
