From the Custom-house there is abeautiful view over Lake Trasimeno, near to whichHannibal obtained a famous victory over theRomans. Arrived at Perugia on the third day andvisited the cathedral; afterwards took a carriageto Assisi and saw the famous convent of St.Francis, remarkable for the three churches builtone above the other. We then proceeded to Foligno,and then on to Spoleto, where I made a sketch ofthe town and gateway where Hannibals progressreceived a check from the inhabitants. Nextreached Terni, where I saw the cascade and thevilla where Queen Caroline resided. Continuedthe journey, passing Narni, with the Roman bridgebuilt by Augustus Caesar, and along a splendid roadacross the mountains and arrived at Nepi. Onthe last day we crossed the Campagna, beautiful inits barrenness—no trees, no water, nor cultivation
