it until the Academy was removed toWoolwich, when he retired and accepted acommutation. A few years later he was givena similar position at Woolwich, and after a time amilitary professor was appointed in his place andhe received a further commutation. In the next year, 1856, we made a charming trip,accompanied by friends, to Tours and Nantes, andthence down beside the river Loire to Blois. Inthe following year we went to Scotland, visitingEdinburgh, Stirling, and Aberdeen, where 1sketched the Brig of Balgownie. In the autumn adinner took place in commemoration of the fiftiethanniversary of the foundation of the Old Water-Colour Society, but owing to a dense fog I wasunable to attend it. In February 1858 I went up to town to attenda meeting of the Old Society, at which John Lewis,who had succeeded Copley Fielding in the office ofPresident, resigned all connection with the Society.He was anxious to become associated with the Royal TOURS (Size I0; x Wi, section taken 10J x 17£ inches.)

AT GREAT MISSENDEN 115 Academy, and in accordance with its rules at thattime no candidate belonging to any other Societyof painters was eligible for election. Lewis waselected an Associate of the Royal Academy twelvemonths later. In the summer we went to Leedsto be present at the inauguration of the great organin the Town Hall; it had been designed by mybrother-in-law, Henry Smart, and he gave amagnificent performance upon it. Afterwards wepaid a visit to friends in Lincolnshire, and laterproceeded to Richmond in Yorkshire, where wegreatly enjoyed some exquisite drives in theneighbourhood. Lady Zetland, on learning that Iwas staying near by, invited me to Aske Hall,and I received a commission from her for severaldrawings. On our return to town I found it necessary toconsult Mr. Caesar Hawkins, the celebratedsurgeon, about a small wen on my cheek, and headvised an operation, which took place underchloroform a few days later. As the wound healedbut slowly I was obliged to wear a bandage
