Iafterwards had a most interesting trip by steamerthrough the canals to Antwerp, and from there Ireturned to England. I had in my younger days been a great smoker,but when I commenced to receive lady pupils Icould only indulge in a pipe during the evenings,and now on the approach of my marriage I decidedto give up the habit entirely. I practically ceasedsmoking from this date, and have never resumed it. In the spring of the following year, 1846, I wasbusily superintending alterations and the decorationof my house in Charlotte Street previous to mymarriage with Miss Smart, which ceremony tookplace at St. Margarets Church, Westminster, in thepresence of a large number of relations and friends.We started on our honeymoon to Ramsgate, and OLD BRIDGE, NUREMBERG (Size 14; x 10f inches.)

IN LONDON 97 on the next day crossed to Ostend. Anotherpupil of mine happened to be married on the sameday as ourselves, and we, curiously, met on board thesteamer. I had to look after both the brides duringthe crossing, as the other husband disappearedshortly after the steamer started. Our honeymoonlasted ten weeks, during which time we went upthe Rhine and across Switzerland to Venice. AtCologne we saw the cathedral before its comple-tion. The crane at the top of the unfinishedtower had been removed from that position, andimmediately afterwards, so it was said, a terrificstorm did an immense amount of damage, and thepriests, looking upon it as a judgment, causedthe crane to be replaced on the tower, where itremained till the Emperor William I. of Germanyhad the cathedral completed. I was at first dis-appointed with Nuremberg, but on looking roundI found many capital subjects.
