ldom missed a lessonduring the seven years I taught her; in fact, untilI left Paris. On leaving, after each lesson, I wasgiven an order for twenty francs from MadameAngeley, and when these orders reached twenty,I presented them at the Bank, and received themoney, viz. four hundred francs in five-francpieces, which I carried away in a bag. I alsogave some lessons to the Prince de Joinville. Icannot speak too highly in praise of this charm-ing family; they were always amiable, kind, andstudying to do whatever they thought would giveme pleasure. These were amongst my happiestdays in France. My drawings now commanded a ready sale,and I had no difficulty in disposing of them tothe dealers. I received forty francs for a drawingof a canal near Croydon, which was a good pricefor me at that time. During this year John Lewis, the distinguishedmember of the Old Water-Colour Society, calledat my atelier, on his way from Spain back to RUE DE LA GROSSE HORLOGE, ROUEN (1895)(Size 25£ X 18J inches.)

PARIS 27 England, to see T. S. Boys, who of course had left.So you are a water-colour painter, he said onexamining my works. He expressed himself sopleased with them that he advised me to sendsome to the Old Water-Colour Society with anapplication to become an Associate, but, not think-ing that he was in earnest, I did not follow hisadvice at the moment. He remained for sometime in Paris, in the Rue de Richelieu, workingindefatigably on his Spanish paintings. On severaloccasions I posed for him as a model, once for myear, and on another occasion wearing a cap ofZumalcarrequi, a Spanish chieftain. During this period the French school of oilpainting was very prolific in artists, such asIngres, Horace Vernet, De la Roche, De laCroix, Descamps, Gudin, Isabey, and Scheffer,all producing fine works, which were shown atthe Salon Exhibitions.
