ssing some splendid views onthe road. The next day we left by coach forComo, crossed the lake in a boat, and arrived therein the evening. On the following day we took asteamer up the lake, which is smaller but prettierthan Maggiore, and went ashore at Bellaggio. Here,although there was no hotel, we obtained some verycomfortable quarters and stayed the night. Wetook a delightful sail up the lake, but, owing to acontrary wind, could only reach Gravedona, where itwas impossible to stay, as every cottage was so dirty;consequently we returned as far as Domaso. Nextday, after sailing for seven hours, we managed toreach Cadenabbia, opposite to Bellaggio, then tookthe steamer back to Como, being very much pleasedwith the trip. Sketched all the next day at Comoand left in the evening for Milan in a velociferi,a long vehicle holding about twenty people, andafter four hours jolting arrived at the capitalof Lombardy, where we inspected the cathedral,the Scala, and other fine buildings. We were muchinterested in this town, with whole streets offine palaces, intermingled with Roman and otherantiquities, the tombs of the Scaligeri, the old bridge,and amphitheatre. Next we proceeded to Padua,with its arcaded streets and two remarkablechurches, in one of which we saw a beautiful paint-ing by Paul Veronese. Being anxious to arrive atVenice, we took the malle poste to Mestre, wherewe embarked in a gondola, traversing for severalmiles over the lagoons, and arrived in the eveningat the steps of Hotel Europa, delighted with ourfirst view of the Queen of the Adriatic. Westayed for ten days, seeing all the wonderful sightsand making many sketches. We left Venice withgreat regret and returned to Padua, whence weposted to Ferrara, and then on to Bologna.
