Acting upon the advice of John Lewis and myfriend Bentley, I sent three drawings to the OldWater-Colour Society in support of my candida-ture for election, and on the 15th February Ireceived the gratifying intelligence that I had beenunanimously elected an Associate. For sometime previously it had been my ambition to becomeassociated with this grand Society, yet when thenews of my election reached me I could scarcelybelieve it to be true, not having sufficient con-fidence in my own powers to think that I should eversucceed. A new incentive for work in the future!The following notice appeared in the Spectator :— The Water-Colour Society last week filled one of twovacancies by electing a Mr. William Callow, landscape and FISHING BOATS OFF THE COAST OF FRANCE(Size 10; X *\ inches.)

LIFE IN PARIS 65 marine painter, not known in this country, but who hasstudied in the French School, we have heard, and is of thedashing style of execution. There were several candidates,most of whom possessed as much merit as many of the presentmembers, but the Society has wisely raised the standard ofqualification, so that the future aspirants will be required toexhibit matured excellence to render them eligible. I learnt later that Cattermole had stronglysupported my candidature, and Copley Fielding,who had known me since I was quite a small boy,had spoken of me in the highest terms of praise.It was a rule of the Society not to elect, as anassociate or member, an artist residing out ofEngland, but an exception was made in my case,and being unable to leave Paris on account of mywork, I sent my contributions to the first twoExhibitions from there. I became acquaintedwith the Comte Stackelberg, a Russian noble, andmembers of his family, also Baronne Mayendorff,and the family of Cherni
