Text Appearing Before Image:
on returning to London Iat once proceeded back to Paris with John Edge, taking with me my brother John, who was thena lad of thirteen years of age. In this year I was offered an appointment asartist to a scientific expedition round the world, but being too much occupied in teaching andmaking a series of drawings on deep-sea fishingfor my Swiss friend Himley, I declined the post. My object in bringing my brother with me toParis was to try and induce him to become an artist, although he had no ambition to take up art. Hewished to be a sailor, but by degrees I persuadedhim to go to the Louvre and copy the paintingsthere. After a time he took great interest in hiswork and made many excellent copies of the old 30 WILLIAM CALLOW masters. I also used to study at the Louvrewhenever I could spare the time, and madenumerous copies of the paintings by Rubens,Titian, Ostade, Salvator Rosa, and many others. They are still in my possession. IN THE HIGH STREET, SOUTHAMPTON (1888)(Size 15J x 18 inches.)

CHAPTER III A WALKING TOUR THROUGH THE SOUTHOF FRANCE In the year 1836, after sending to an Exhibitionat Cambrai a water-colour painting for which Iwas awarded a silver medal, I determined to makea walking tour through the south of France, leaving Jack Edge and my brother to carry on thework in my atelier. The following account of this tour is extractedfrom a diary which I kept at the time:— June 6.—We, i.e. myself, a German friend 31 32 WILLIAM CALLOW named Soherr, and his dog, left Paris by diligenceat eight oclock in the evening for Chartres, andthe weather being fine, we had a pleasant journey. June 7.—A fine view of the town with thecathedral on a hill as we approached Chartres atsix oclock in the morning. A man on the diligencerecommended us to some lodgings, which turnedout to be a shoemakers. We could not see theinterior of the cathedral as the roof had un-fortunately been burnt three days previously, sovisited the churches of St. Pierre and St.
